An exhibition, dedicated to the president elections in the United States of America was opened in the Murmansk State Regional Scientific library. Election technologies, financing of the election campaign, agitation and black PR – all these things are reflected in print, electronic media, and television. American stand in the Murmansk Scientific library has already become the traditional source of information for those citizens of our city, who are interested in American life. Everybody, who has a desire, can find all the necessary information, connected with different aspects of life in the West. The materials for this stand were given by the American Embassy in Russia and by the Department of Printing and Culture. These materials include more than one thousand books, videocassettes, and computer discs. The topic of the exhibition " Elections in the United States of America" turned up just at the right moment for the citizens. It has something in common with the electoral campaign in Murmansk. During these hard times for the voters, the organizers of this exhibition give them a chance to compare electoral systems in Russia and in the USA. This process in America is quite strict and it has much in common with the election debates in Russia. For example, one can notice that propaganda sheets are almost the same, and what is even more important – that that the results are the same as well – influenced by the contradictory information, the voters choose the candidate not according to their mind or heart, they vote for the familiar face.
The World Wildlife Fund opened in Murmansk its representative office. It is quartered within the walls of the Murmansk Regional Scientific Library. The picture of a good- natured white and black bear – panda – has become the symbol of The World Wildlife Fund. When, in 1961, a few people announced the creation of the Fund, they could hardly imagine what the result of their idea would be. The Head of the Arctic program WWF Samantha Smith says: "In our Fund there are almost 5 million people all over the world. About 5 years ago we chose 200 places of high priority where we want to work." And one of such places is Barents Sea. Exactly here, as it was said on the presentation, we can find great amount of cod and salmon, the biggest waterside rookeries and the biggest coral reef in the cold northern waters. And at the same time Barents Sea remains the cleanest one. To preserve it in this condition is the main aim of the project. On the ceremony of the mission’s opening the representatives of the Fund from Norway and the heads of Moscow office were present,as well as all those numerous guests who devoted their professional life to environmental activity. The representative offices are opened in 130 countries of the world.
